His laugh, his voice and his playful energy may have been taken too soon, but Pop Smoke certainly made his strong ethical values known before he left us, which will last forever.
Pop Smoke was born Bashar Barakah Jackson, in New York 1999. The American rapper, singer, actor and songwriter was shot and killed in a home invasion in Los Angeles aged 20, in February 2020.
The young artist was just warming up his career, influenced by 50 Cent, DMX and Meek Mill. Pop’s unique sound brought Brooklyn drill music into the spotlight with his style typically heard in the UK rap scene. His success began when he released Welcome To The Party in April 2019 with support from A$AP Ferg. This was followed with the release of his debut project Meet the Woo in July.
Pop gained more attention in December 2019, when he collaborated with Houston rapper Travis Scott and JACKBOYS on the track GATTI. Months later in February 2020, his rapid rise to fame finally came with the release of his second project, Meet the Woo 2, weeks before his tragic death.
His debut album Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon was released early July 2020 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. A deluxe version was subsequently released on July 20, 2020 which would have been Pop’s 21st birthday.
No doubt wiser than his years, Pop Smokes amazing captions will forever remain for all the young hustlers out there with big dreams, in need of big inspiration.
