Born 1969 in Louisiana, Tyler Perry is an American actor, director, producer and screenwriter. His career began in writing, after being inspired during an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show in his early 20’s. This was an attempt to work on his problems stemmed during childhood, which initiated a series of letters to himself and the basis for the musical I Know I’ve Been Changed.

During the 1900’s and early 2000’s, Perry went on to write and produce many stage plays. He developed several television series including Tyler Perry’s House of Payne which ran for eight seasons from 2006 to 2012. In 2012, he struck an exclusive multi-year partnership with Oprah Winfrey and her Oprah Winfrey Network. He has since created multiple scripted series for the network.

Perry’s directorial debut came with an adaptation of Madea’s Family Reunion which opened in 2006 and reached number one on the box office with $30.3 million, before eventually grossing $65 million. He has continued to direct all subsequent Madea films. His other projects have included Daddy’s Little Girls, Why Did I Get Married, Meet the Browns and The Family That Preys.

An actor as well, Perry has appeared in Star Trek, Alex Cross, Gone Girl, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Vice, Those Who Wish Me Dead and PAW Patrol: The Movie.

In 2020, Perry was included in Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People. The same year, received the Governors Award from the Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2021, he was awarded  the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy Awards.
